The Shiwaku Islands are part of Setonaikai National Park, the first designated national park in Japan. The archipelago is made up of a total of 28 islands of varying sizes. During the Warring States period, the islands had their own navy, and in the Edo period, they even had enough power to be granted autonomy by the shogunate and singlehandedly controlled westbound shipping operations.
