“Sanuki uchiwa from Iyo bamboo, Tosa paper, and Awa glue; cool air will flow through Shikoku.” This is a rough translation of a Japanese tanka poem describing the local Shikoku handicraft of Marugame uchiwa fans (Sanuki uchiwa), made using sustainable materials all from the island of Shikoku: Ehime (formerly Iyo Province), Kochi (Tosa), Tokushima (Awa).
Traditional craftspeople will be on hand to unravel the history of the national traditional craft of Marugame uchiwa fans as they guide you through an authentic hands-on uchiwa creation experience from bamboo all the way to the finished product at the beautiful Shohantei building located within the Nakazu Bansho-en feudal garden.
